Unlock Your Skin's Potential: The Benefits of Home Needling

5th March 2025

At Boheme, we believe in empowering you with the knowledge and tools to achieve your best skin. That's why we're diving into the world of at-home microneedling with gentle 0.1mm or 0.2mm rollers. This isn't about drastic changes, but about enhancing your skin's natural ability to absorb and benefit from your favourite active ingredients, boosting the results you see from your professional treatments. Let's explore the science, the benefits, and the safe practices of this simple yet effective technique.

Understanding Microneedling (The Science Behind the Glow):

Microneedling, at its core, involves creating tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin's surface. With a 0.1mm or 0.2mm roller, these channels are incredibly superficial, focusing on enhancing product absorption rather than stimulating collagen production like deeper professional treatments. This creates a temporary "pathway" for your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the epidermis, where they can work more effectively.

  • Safety First: These shorter needles are designed for surface-level application, minimising the risk of irritation or damage when used correctly at home.
  • Enhanced Product Absorption: These tiny channels significantly improve the penetration of topical skincare products.
  • Maintenance Between Professional Treatments: They help maintain the benefits of your in-clinic treatments, keeping your skin healthy and receptive.

The Benefits of Infusing Active Ingredients:

  • Vitamin A (Retinoids): Known for its cell-renewing, skin-normalising, and age-management properties, Vitamin A can help improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and even out skin tone. It can penetrate deeper to maximise these benefits when infused with micro needling.
  • Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C brightens the skin, protects against environmental damage, and stimulates collagen production. Microneedling allows for better absorption, amplifying its brightening and protective effects.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): This versatile ingredient helps strengthen the skin barrier, reduce redness, and minimise pores. Microneedling enhances its ability to calm and strengthen the skin.
  • Antioxidants (e.g., Green Tea Extract, Resveratrol): These potent ingredients neutralise free radicals, protecting the skin from environmental damage and premature aging. Microneedling helps deliver these antioxidants deeper, enhancing their protective and reparative effects.
  • Peptides: These amino acid chains stimulate collagen and elastin production. Specific peptides address pigmentation and strengthen the skin, improving firmness and reducing wrinkles. Microneedling allows peptides to reach deeper layers of the skin, maximising their anti-aging benefits.

How to Microneedle at Home (Boheme's Step-by-Step Guide):

  1. Cleanse Thoroughly: Start with a clean face. Use a gentle cleanser to remove all makeup and impurities.
  2. Sanitise Your Roller: Always sanitise your microneedling roller before each use with isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher). Allow it to air dry completely.
  3. Apply Your Chosen Serum: Apply a thin, even layer of your chosen active ingredient serum (Vitamin A, C, Niacinamide, Antioxidant, Beta-Glucan, or Peptide) to the area you'll be treating.
  4. Gentle Rolling Technique: Using light pressure, roll the microneedling roller in four directions (vertically, horizontally, and diagonally) 2-3 times over each section of your face. Avoid the delicate eyelid area.
  5. Reapply Serum: After rolling, apply another thin layer of your serum to the treated area.
  6. Moisturize: Follow with a gentle, hydrating moisturiser to lock in the serum and soothe the skin.
  7. Clean and Store: Clean your roller again with isopropyl alcohol and store it in a clean, dry place.

Safety Precautions:

  • Cleanliness is Key: Always sanitise your roller before and after each use.
  • Gentle Pressure: Use very light pressure to avoid irritation.
  • Avoid Irritated Skin: Do not use microneedling on irritated, inflamed, or broken skin.
  • Sun Protection: Always wear sunscreen during the day, especially after microneedling, as your skin will be more sensitive.
  • Replace Your Roller: Replace your roller every 1-3 months or sooner if the needles appear damaged.
  • Consult a Professional: Before starting home micro needling, consult with your Boheme skin therapist if you have any concerns or underlying skin conditions.

How Often Should You Microneedle at Home?

For 0.1mm or 0.2mm rollers, 2-3 times a week is a good starting point. However, it's essential to listen to your skin. If you experience redness or irritation, this is usually due to a dramatic increase in active ingredient penetration. Reduce the frequency of use to allow your skin to process this new level of active ingredients.
